Outdoor Recreation

Having fun outdoors with friends and family

There are so many different activities you can do outdoors. You may prefer more relaxing and passive activities at times and more physically active activities at others. Outdoor recreation activities allow you to enjoy your time with nature while spending time with family and friends. Outdoor activities could stand in for exercise if done for a substantial period of time, and can be a great alternative to going to the gym.

Relaxing Outdoor Recreation Activities

  • Making s'mores. A fire pit is the perfect way for family and friends to spend time together outdoors. For s'mores, all you'll need are graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows. Put two squares of chocolate on top of one cracker, then toast a marshmallow over the fire until it's charred to your liking. Place the marshmallow over the chocolate squares between the two graham crackers and you've got a great treat!
  • Stargazing. For obvious reasons, this activity only works on a clear night. You can use a telescope or a pair of binoculars to gaze at the cosmos, or you can just lay down a blanket in the yard and look up with the naked eye.
  • Soaking in a hot tub. This is one of the most relaxing outdoor activities. If you have an outdoor speaker system, play some relaxing music. Mix up your favorite drink and enjoy some good conversations with friends.

Active Outdoor Recreation Activities

  • Ice skating. This is one of the best outdoor activities to do when the weather gets colder. Bring friends to your local ice skating rink and spend an hour or two on the ice. When you get tired, take a hot chocolate break!
  • Hiking. Explore your local hiking paths by searching the Internet. Start with a few miles and add more as you become a more confident hiker. Bring friends and be sure to bring water to stay hydrated! Make it harder by hiking uphill and then reward yourself at the top with a homemade picnic lunch.
  • Playing badminton. Badminton nets are very easy to set up in your backyard. Purchase a few rackets and birdies to play with friends. You could even play volleyball with this net on a beautiful day.
